The government’s search for potential power sources and the stability of the water supply must take into account the safety of Indigenous Peoples (IP) communities and environmental protection.

All options, particularly big waterways where IPs might be located, according to senator Sherwin Gatchalian, must be considered.

“Natin dapat timbang. We must balance all of our alternatives, including the IPs and the surroundings, in order for them to not be detrimental to the whole situation. In order to keep them out of trouble, we need to strike a balance between them,” Gatchalian said during a press conference on Tuesday.

Given that hydropower facilities generate 10% of the nation’s electricity, Gatchalian claimed that a lack of water supplies will also have an impact on energy resources.

Previously, Gatchalian urged the Energy Regulatory Commission to impose fines and bring legal action against electricity distributors who “over-contract” power supply to the detriment of the consumers who pay for it.

The practice of over-contracting involves power distributors, especially electric cooperatives, buying more electricity than what consumers actually need for a specific time period.

Gatchalian stated that the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines reassured him that there will be no power outages throughout the hot, dry season.
