To combat child malnutrition, Negros Occidental administers 3-month feedings.

With PHP10 million in funding, the province administration of Negros Occidental is starting a three-month feeding program to combat childhood malnutrition in 20 designated villages.

The target children-beneficiaries, who live in the municipalities of Calatrava and Don Salvador Benedicto, have already had their baseline data collected as of Thursday.

“Our public health program includes nutrition. It’s already been started. We have made available 10 million PHP. According to Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz II, “The governor (Eugenio Jose Lacson) released it to the 20 barangays, which are the pilot regions, last Monday.

According to Diaz, the kids are being served breakfast and lunch according to the menus planned out for two-week periods.

This marks the start of our public health initiative to improve children’s nutrition in order to protect their future physical and mental health. We now have a lot of stuff going on. We will repeat this in other places if it turns out to be successful, he continued.

The worst cases of malnutrition in Negros Occidental have been found to be in Calatrava and Don Salvador Benedicto.

Earlier, Diaz had stated that records of 20% stunting (low height for age) and wasting (low weight for height) among youngsters in some local government units (LGUs) should be cause for concern.

In order to address the urgent issues of hunger, malnutrition, and food insecurity, the provincial government is collaborating with the Negros Occidental Nutrition Alliance through the Provincial Health Office, which is also working with the University of St. La Salle and the Philippine Business for Social Progress.

“Our performance in terms of nutrition appears to be satisfactory when we look at the data for the entire Negros Occidental. But there are individuals who are left behind at the barangay and LGU levels. We cannot limit our analysis to the average and overall statistics. Nobody should be left behind, Diaz declared.
