The direction from the energy chief to stop purchasing diesel generating sets (gensets) in order to speed up the renewable energy program in its Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) power plants was supported by the National Power Corp. (Napocor) on Friday.

Martin Roxas, president, and chief executive officer of Napocor stated in a statement on Friday that his company will follow Raphael Lotilla’s order to stop purchasing diesel gensets in order to minimize the company’s reliance on fossil fuels.

In locations where wind farms may be built, Roxas also promised to boost the number of solar home systems (SHS) and wind resource assessments.

In order to fully utilise renewable energy (RE) with energy storage systems for new areas, we want to advocate for hybridization for the current SPUG. This would reduce the losses brought on by growing gasoline prices and eventually increase the sustainability of our operations, he said.

Napocor won contracts for the installation of 2,600 SHS units last year in Masbate, Bohol, Dinagat, Sulu, and Basilan, as well as in Maconacon and Divilacan in Isabela.

The SHS units, which are being given out to unserviced homes in SPUG areas, come with solar panels, batteries, light-emitting diodes (LED) lamps, radios, and torch lamps with 5V charging connections.

While government-owned and controlled corporations implement their RE programs, according to Roxas, this action will eventually reduce generation costs and reduce carbon emissions.

The conversion of all SPUG regions to 100% RE operations is his ultimate objective, he continued.
