Power security requires a battery energy storage system: PBBM

On Friday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. declared that the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) would play a key role in the government’s plan to make the Philippines more energy secure.

At the opening of the San Miguel Corporation’s (SMC) BESS in Limay, Bataan, Marcos declared that the energy storage project’s promise, originality, and innovation would alleviate the nation’s challenges with energy security.

“This technology is paving a clear route towards a more sustainable and energy-secure future for the nation. According to Marcos, it is clean, emits no emissions, uses no water, and produces no noise pollution.

We must advance and incorporate Energy Storage Systems, or ESS, in our entire energy infrastructure in light of the rising production of renewable energy “Added he.

According to Marcos, the BESS also has enormous potential for creating “green jobs” in addition to producing enough consistent, clean energy to make electricity more affordable.

The BESS is one of the largest integrated grid-scale battery energy storage projects in the world and the first of its kind in the Philippines.

The President praised SMC for adding a storage component to the overall energy infrastructure since it will offer the necessary support system for maximizing these resources and increasing their efficiency and dependability.

Electricity might be kept when not needed or during times of excess supply and released whenever necessary or when there is a shortage, he said, thanks to the advancement of technology.

BESS, according to SMC CEO Ramon S. Ang, could fundamentally alter both the Philippine economy and Filipinos’ quality of life.

BESS plants, strategically positioned across the nation, according to Ang, can immediately augment peak systems supply to meet the country’s rising energy demand in the wake of the pandemic.

According to Ang, existing base load power plants can run constantly and more effectively while receiving a sizable amount of their peak supply from BESS, resulting in cheaper electricity prices for Filipino customers.

He said, “They may store extra energy from conventional and renewable sources during times of low demand and release it back to the grid during times of peak need.”

The Philippine socio-economic goal can be achieved sustainably, according to Ang, who claimed that technology is the answer the nation needs to assist handle its most critical energy crisis.

Further funding and legislation are planned to help BESS.

The President stated that a revised and enlarged version of the ESS policy is now being developed by the Department of Energy (DOE).

He continued by saying that the laws and regulations in place today must keep up with technology.

Also, Marcos reassured energy sector investors that his administration is still dedicated to providing all necessary support systems to achieve a true cooperation and mutually profitable relationship.

To support the continued growth of our nascent renewables business, he declared, “We will improve the policy and regulatory environment for the RE industry, notably for the ESS technology.”

He urged greater investments that will boost the nation’s supply of renewable energy and stated that the government’s goal is to raise the proportion of renewables in the whole mix of the nation’s generation.

“As part of our agenda to improve bureaucratic efficiency and sound fiscal management for a much better, more streamlined, more efficient system, we will harmonize and streamline the regulatory framework at the national and local levels to ensure ease of doing business and to remove unnecessary regulatory burdens, “said he.

Marcos declared that his administration will keep working with the SMC, pointing out that the latter had other BESS projects in the works that make up 95% of all Board of Investments-approved projects and have a combined capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW) spread around the nation.

San Miguel Global Power currently ushers in a new era for the Filipino energy industry with the commercial operations of around 1,000 MW of BESS plants across 32 locations in the country.
