Proposed law to prevent kids and teenagers from having social media accounts advances
At the Iowa State Capitol, a bill that would forbid kids and teenagers from having social media accounts is now being debated.
The legislation was advanced by a House subcommittee’s vote on Thursday morning.
All Iowans aged 18 and under would be prohibited from having their own social media accounts.
Social media corporations would be fined $1,000 for each infraction under the HF 526 legislation.
It occurs at a time when social media’s effects on children’s mental health are a source of widespread concern.
Before moving to the floor of the House, the bill still needs to clear a committee.
