The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has been instructed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to postpone the fare hikes for Light Rail Transit (LRT) 1 and 2 awaiting the completion of a study on the financial effects of these changes on the riding public.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista stated in a press conference at Malacanang on Tuesday that the agency will follow the President’s order and reevaluate the financial effects of the approved fare hikes for the boarding fees by PHP2.29 and by PHP0.21 for every kilometer.

With the changes, the boarding fare will rise to PHP13.29 plus a PHP1.21 per kilometer distance fee from the current PHP11 and PHP1 boarding and distance fares that have been in effect since 2015.

According to Bautista, the MRT-3 fare increase was also delayed “because of deficiencies in compliance with the standards and procedure.”

According to the President’s order, Bautista said, “We would carefully analyze the effects of a fare increase today on passengers of our three rail lines in Metro Manila.”

Nonetheless, Bautista claimed that by raising the fares, the commuter rail lines will be able to “upgrade their services, facilities, and technical capabilities” and continue to offer reasonably priced mass transit services.
