‘Swill feeding’ of pigs must stop, are advised.

To stop the spread of African swine flu (ASF), the Department of Agriculture in Western Visayas (DA-6) has reissued its appeal to farmers to stop feeding their swine with food scraps.

The animal sickness was discovered in the province of Aklan, namely at a small farm in Barangay Arcangel in the municipality of Balete, according to Jonic Natividad, head of the DA Regulatory Division, who confirmed it on Friday.

Two samples from the upland barangay proved positive for the disease, according to a copy of the convective polymerase chain reaction (cPCR) results provided to the provincial government on April 12 by the DA Regional Animal Diseases and Diagnostic Laboratory (RADDL).

In an interview, he stated, “In our talk with the provincial veterinarian, the possible source is through swill feeding.”

Natividad noted that in addition to feeding their animals with grated coconut, the affected swine’s owner also fed them leftover food.

According to their analysis and prior knowledge, the official claimed that the food might have originated from frozen items that were imported into the area that was ASF-infected.

Nevertheless, he claimed that the province could handle the situation because Aklan had benefited from the DA’s Agricultural Training Institute’s fast response training.

Since Aklan is an access gateway from Luzon, the DA furnished them with a disinfection truck through the BAI (Bureau of Animal Industry), he continued.

According to Natividad, farmers were told to just watch and exercise good biosecurity and say no to swill feeding because they were unable to quickly open any luggage and could not easily control the movement of individuals.

Meanwhile, Balete Mayor Dexter M. Calizo issued Executive Order No. 06 on April 11 restricting hog sellers and animal carriers from operating in the whole municipality.

The decree said that it was not permitted to transport live hogs or any other type of pork product from Barangay Arcangel to other barangays in Balete or the remainder of the Aklan province.

According to statistics, Aklan has 110,000 pigs, of which 97 percent are reared in backyards.

In Western Visayas, only the provinces of Antique and Negros Occidental are currently regarded as ASF-free.
