The Municipal Tourism and Cultural Heritage Office (MTCHO) is preparing to establish a new perspective tourism sector in Camalig Town, Albay province.

The only underground cave in the town, with a gross area of 4,039.810 square meters and a length of 633 meters, has been accessed by the local government unit (LGU) of Camalig for more than 13 years, but visitors and residents have not yet been permitted entry due to various hazards like poor air quality, small chambers, and deep water.

On Thursday, the MTCHO carried out a preliminary area and risk assessment at the Calabidongan Cave in Barangay Calabidongan.

While the MTCHO looks to develop a tourism plan that includes an inventory of assets, area access, the deployment of trained personnel, and environmental compliance, Florece said that staff from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) suggested updating the cave management plan to cover safe and effective cave management.

He claimed that the villagers have long known about the Calabidongan Cave. The municipal government decided to develop the site because of the cave’s great historical importance in order to promote its tourism expertise, which will lead to increased revenue and earning potential for locals.

The DENR and Camalig LGU plan to fully explore the cave to ascertain whether it can hold visitors, giving top priority to public safety and environmental preservation.

Until the local authority creates safe procedures for spelunking and other cave-related activities, the cave is still off-limits to the general public.
