DOST increases vegetable and herbal plant output in Bulacan

In order to increase the production of vegetable crops and other plants, including herbal plants, in the province of Bulacan, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is constantly pushing hydroponics technology.

According to DOST Regional Director Julius Cesar Sicat, the organization recently gave seven designated needy in the province each access to a vertical hydroponics system with a greenhouse.

The Sta. Cruz Farmers Association in Angat, the Bulacan Natural Farmers Association (BANAFAR) in Pulilan town, the Balaong Vegetable Farmers Association in San Miguel, the Knights of St. Francis Farmers Association in the City of San Jose de Monte, the local government unit of San Pablo in Malolos City, the local government unit of Tibig in Bulakan town, and the local government unit of San Lorenzo in Norzagaray were among the beneficiaries, according to Sicat.

According to a statement he made, “The DOST seeks to introduce smart agricultural technologies that will help in improving the communities’ access to herbal plants and other vegetable crops.”

According to Sicat, the vertical tower hydroponics system is a water- and space-saving technology that provides the beneficiaries with a variety of options.

Because of the soilless and water-recirculation principles, which make the vertical garden excellent news for both the globe and the table, he claimed that it might do wonders for food security.

The presence of microbes and heavy metals, which are essential components in the manufacture of herbal medicines and other crops, would also be eliminated, he added, thanks to hydroponics technology.

The DOST has arranged technology training on the use and upkeep of the vertical hydroponics system to assure the project’s sustainability.

Sen. Joel Villanueva consistently supports the DOST-III Expanded Implementation of Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) initiative, which provided funding for the project.
