On Tuesday, Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco said that despite social media criticism, the bureau would keep up its stepped-up battle against unlawful recruiting and human trafficking.

“There will be no letup in our campaign so long as these traffickers and illegal recruiters continue to prey on our countrymen who are sent to work abroad without proper documents and protection from the government,” he declared in a statement on Tuesday.

“I have told our officers to continue carrying out their tasks honorably and patriotically. We won’t let social media mockery stop us from carrying out our responsibility to stop human trafficking at our ports, Tansingco continued.

He stated the opinion that the syndicates themselves are driving the bureau’s defamation campaign in the misguided hope that it will cause front liners to loosen up and go covert in their fight against human trafficking.

According to Tansingco, his agency has received instances of passengers acting erratically while undergoing inspection, which makes it challenging for the officers to carry out their duties.

“Our policemen are urged to carry out their duties with professionalism. We ask that the general public show our uniformed employees the same respect,” he stated.

“I have asked them to stay focused on their jobs because what we are doing is to protect our countrymen from being subjected to abuse and maltreatment in foreign lands,” he continued.

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) intercepted three outgoing Filipino travelers who were allegedly being unlawfully recruited to work in Dubai through Hong Kong, thwarting another accused human trafficking operation.

The victims attempted to board a Cathay Pacific flight at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 on April 11, their names concealed for their safety.

The passengers pretended to be tourists traveling to Hong Kong before confessing that they had been hired as household service workers (HSWs) in Dubai.

“The passengers tried to scare the immigration officials by presenting certificates of employment at a nearby legal firm, leading them to believe they were traveling for leisure. They later admitted that a woman named Helen had promised them positions as HSWs in Dubai with salaries of AED 1600, according to Tansingco.

The victims said that while they awaited their visas to the United Arab Emirates, they were meant to remain in Hong Kong.

They were given to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking so that cases could be filed against their recruiters with their help.
