PH-US relations are moving toward greater understanding, according to a House leader
Following a series of meetings with US House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and other US lawmakers in the US Capitol, Washington DC, on Wednesday, House of Representatives Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez claimed that relations between the Philippines and the US have reached new heights and levels of understanding.
The Philippine group was cordially received at the Office of the Majority Leader by Scalise (Louisiana, 1st congressional district), who was reportedly happy to meet them. This was said in a press statement from Romualdez’s office.
“We appreciate Majority Leader Scalise’s warm greeting, nice remarks, and most importantly, his commitment to further deepening US-Philippine relations in a variety of areas, on behalf of the House of Representatives in Manila. To put it mildly, it was a productive and interesting discussion, and Romualdez observed, “I believe that we are reaching new heights and levels of understanding.
He claimed that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration in the Philippines had restored diplomatic ties with the US in order to promote stability, peace, and prosperity, particularly by strengthening our military prowess and economic security.
“Let’s bring the two nations closer together. We are here to solicit assistance from the US Congress for measures that would bolster and enhance our defenses against external threats and natural disasters, Romualdez continued.
The US representatives Darrell Issa, Ami Bera, Mike Rogers (head of the House Armed Services Committee), and Christian Stewart, as well as the Filipino-American attorney general of Utah, Sean David Reyes, met separately with the Philippine group.
During the sessions, they talked about ways to improve bilateral strategic communication between the two long-standing allies as well as defense and security partnerships.
“This strengthens Presidents Marcos and (Joe) Biden’s productive working relationship. You can be sure that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle will put in the required effort to make the advantages of this dynamic partnership ten times more apparent, Romualdez added.
The US has provided the Philippines with significant defensive aid as a treaty ally, including training and equipment for defense.
For defense modernization, maritime security, counterterrorism, anti-narcotics, anti-human trafficking, humanitarian aid and disaster response, and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear preparedness, the Philippines received defense and security assistance totaling about USD1.8 billion from 2002 to 2021.
Washington continues to be a significant and strategic commercial and investment partner of Manila on the economic front. Despite difficulties caused by the pandemic, this economic alliance remained solid.
The US was the Philippines’ third-largest trading partner, top export market, and fifth-largest source of imports in 2021, while the Philippines was the US’s thirty-first-largest trading partner. In 2021, the US ranked fifth in terms of the amount of foreign capital invested in the Philippines, particularly in the IT-BPM, electronics, real estate, construction, and transportation and storage industries.
The Philippines has become a home for American corporations, including Fortune 500 firms. They value the Philippines’ pro-business policies, educated and competent workforce, and extensive economic zone network.
We asked the US to increase and expand its investments because of our robust economy. I recently worked with President Marcos’ economic team to help increase investment during the 2023 World Bank Group-International Monetary Fund Spring Meetings, according to Romualdez. “At this time, the House leadership’s legislative delegation is speaking with their US Congress counterparts. We are making every effort to spread a strong message encouraging people to visit and invest in the Philippines.
Romualdez was joined by the majority leader and representative from Zamboanga’s second district, Manual Jose Dalipe, the deputy speaker and representative from Pampanga’s third district, Aurelio Gonzales Jr., the representatives from Navotas City and Agusan del Norte’s first district, Tobias Tiangco and Jose S. Aquino II, as well as the Philippine ambassador to the United States, Jose Manuel del Gallego Romualdez.
