Increased water supply allotment for MWSS is approved by NWRB.

To aid with water interruptions, the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) has raised the allocation for the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the remaining days of April.

NWRB Executive Director Dr. Sevillo David Jr. stated during the Laging Handa Public Briefing televised on PTV4 on Wednesday that they acknowledge the actions being made by the MWSS to immediately address water supply issues prior to the El Nio phenomena.

The NWRB increased its allocation to the MWSS from the original 48 cubic meters per second (cms) to 52 cms for the month of April, so that’s what the tulong means: “To help mitigate the water interruptions, especially in the west zone area of Metro Manila, which is affecting about 1 million households, the NWRB increased its allocation to the MWSS.

According to David, the desired 52 cms allocation for the following month has also been conditionally authorized, subject to MWSS fulfilling its obligations and adhering to certain requirements on water augmentation and conservation during this month.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)’s most recent estimate indicates that the Angat region in Norzagay, Bulacan, would see near-normal rainfall from May to September 2023. This is anticipated to refill the Angat Dam’s water supply and lessen the impact of the upcoming El Nio phenomena in the year’s later months.

The NWRB continuously monitors, assesses, and manages the water supply for Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces in collaboration with its partners MWSS, National Irrigation Administration, PAGASA, and the National Power Corporation.

A technical working group is also creating backup strategies to lessen El Nio’s consequences.

In order to preserve the sustainability of the water supply in homes, companies, enterprises, and communities, David also urged water consumers to implement sensible water conservation techniques.

“Sa ngayon po, ayon naman po sa mga report nari-receive natin ay nagkaroon naman po ng significant improvement doon sa supply po ng tubig partikular po sa nakakaranas po ng mga water interruption (We have received reports of significant improvement in the supply of water, particularly from those experiencing water interruption),” he continued.
