Senator calls on the government to combat “scam call centers”

On Wednesday, Senator Risa Hontiveros urged government organizations to find “scam call centers” that employed immigrants who had been brought into the country illegally.

Hontiveros called back after a man from Indonesia asked for assistance after being tricked into working there to con other Indonesians.

Hontiveros began the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality hearing by lamenting the existence of scam centers in the Philippines “right under our very noses.”

She claimed that people who are trafficked and made to commit fraud on helpless victims are living and working in enormous condominium buildings.

Hontiveros claimed that the hundreds of people who are currently being trafficked are from South Asia, Africa, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Indonesia.

Hontiveros discovered a sizable human trafficking ring that preyed on Filipinos looking for work abroad last year. The OFWs were subsequently made to work as con artists in Cambodia and Myanmar.

“A humanitarian emergency is developing. a large population in need. People all throughout the world are mistreated, misused, and injured in order to commit fraud. In a statement, Hontiveros said, “Hurting others to fool others” (Nananakit ng kapwa para manloko ng kapwa).

At the hearing, an Indonesian man named Ridwan (not his real name) said that after applying to work in the Philippines as a digital marketer, he later learned that his position involved duping other Indonesians into making fake cryptocurrency investments.

On March 7, he entered the nation. He claimed that an escort met him and two other Indonesians and assisted them in smoothly navigating the Philippine immigration and Bureau of Quarantine checkpoints. Later, they were taken to the Bayport West NAIA Garden Apartments.

“We were told to assume other people’s identities in order to con targets. We are aiming for other Indonesians. We locate them on Facebook, Instagram, and Tinder. We force our targets to make Bitcoin investments once they have fallen in love with us. Ridwan warned the committee that if they did not find victims, they would be punished.

He claimed that when coworkers didn’t perform their duties, they were electrocuted and subjected to harsh punishment.

When asked to pay the PHP100,000 that the company had spent to bring Ridwan to the Philippines, Ridwan indicated he wanted to depart right away. He departed the location on March 13.

“It is disturbing that social media platforms have facilitated these illegal actions. The ease with which foreigners might enter the country with the help of dishonest airport or immigration personnel, however, is even more horrifying to hear. This is a significant threat to national security that requires immediate attention. We cannot permit these gangs to convert our nation into a haven for criminal activity, Hontiveros stated.
