Senatorial bets by the PDP-Laban to maintain NTF-ELCAC gains

MANILA, Philippines — On Tuesday, the senatorial candidates of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) committed to keeping the accomplishments made by the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) under President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration.

Astravel Pimentel-Naik, speaking at a press conference, emphasized the need to end the New People’s Army’s (NPA) illicit recruitment of youth, particularly from indigenous peoples (IPs) villages in the countryside (NPA).

“Ito ay natin labanan natin natin natin natin natin natin natin natin natin nati With fact, I’ve expressed my unhappiness in the NTF-pagkaltas ELCAC’s ng pondo (We want to combat this.) In fact, I’ve conveyed my displeasure with the reduction in NTF-funding),” ELCAC’s she stated.

For a long time, Naik bemoaned the fact that many parts of Mindanao had been denied development assistance until the Duterte administration assumed office.

She claimed that only President Duterte heeded Mindanao’s longstanding call for peace and development.

She said that the government brought economic growth to Mindanao through the NTF-ELCAC, citing examples like as the flagship Barangay Development Program (BDP), which Pimentel hoped the new administration would continue.

Villages that have been freed of insurgents receive money from the BDP.

The PHP24 billion NTF-ELCAC budget decrease last year, according to Rey Langit, had an impact on the BDP in the countryside, particularly road networks and farm-to-market roads.

“Partially, dito po sa budget ng NTF-ELCAC, ang dami po natulungan at ang dami ang na-address na problema, hindi lamang po sa armed conflict,” Langit remarked.

Meanwhile, Rodante Marcoleta has targeted terrorist groups linked to the Philippines’ Communist Party (CPP).

“Why won’t they condemn the acts of insurgent organizations in the country?” “Bakit kahit minsan hindi nila kinondena ang ginagawa nung mga insurgent groups sa ating bansa?” According to Marcoleta, this is why the public perceives them as sympathizers with communist terrorist groups.

The United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines have all designated the CPP-NPA as a terrorist group.

New supporters have joined the cause.

The Movement for Reform and Regional Development towards New Economic and Cultural Cooperation Inc has endorsed Naik, Langit, Marcoleta, and the rest of the PDP-Laban slate, including Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi’s group (MRRD-NECC).

The UniTeam duo of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte was previously endorsed by the volunteer group.

Other Cusi-backed candidates include John Castriciones, Robin Padilla, Greco Belgica, and Salvador Panelo.

On Tuesday, the MRRD-NECC issued a statement saying, “We promise ourselves to campaign and mobilize to push for their triumph on May 9, 2022.”

Castriciones, on the other side, stated his support for Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso.
