Respect for variety is a powerful force for creating a country: Romualdez
In celebration of Eid al-Fitr on Saturday, House of Representatives Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez joined Filipino Muslims. He emphasized the need of respecting one another despite having different religious beliefs.
In a statement, Romualdez stated, “We send our heartfelt greetings to our Muslim brothers and sisters as we join them in celebrating Eid’l Fitr marking the conclusion of Ramadan, the most sacred month in the Islamic faith.
“May God provide you and your families good health, joy, and wealth. May the gifts of life be upon you and your loved ones, and may peace rule over your homes and hearts.
He emphasized how deeply ingrained it is in our Constitution to recognize and appreciate the variety of our religious beliefs.
Thus, he continued, the Filipino people continue to advance regardless of creed or belief “as a nation, as Filipinos united under one flag.”
According to Romualdez, “We view this diversity not as a barrier to development but as a potent moving force for all of us to contribute to nation-building in our own way, according to our respective religious beliefs.”
Meanwhile, Mujiv Hataman, a representative from Basilan and the House Deputy Minority Leader, urged his fellow Muslims to keep in mind and put into practice the lessons they learned from Ramadan in order to improve as people and citizens.
I hope that the virtues we strive to exemplify—love, patience, humility, kindness, charity, and peace—will cling to us long after today as we celebrate Eid’l Fitr. Hataman added in his message, “We should keep letting go of all the hate and fury and embrace peace and justice as a way of life for all of us.
He asserted that Eid al-Fitr marks the conclusion of a month of self-control and sacrifice, during which Muslims are permitted to exhibit greater patience and humility in order to bestow the virtues of kindness and generosity upon others.
“It is also at this time that we desire to spread peace and justice in our homes and communities amid the incidence of violence that we have seen in recent days,” he said. “Sa panahon ding ito hangad natin ang pagpapalaganap ng kapayapaan at katarungan sa ating mga tahanan at komunidad.”
