Fish farmers in Tarlac learn polyculture techniques for tilapia and prawns.

To help the fishery business in the area, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Central Luzon (BFAR-3) is pushing freshwater polyculture technology.

About 40 fish farmers from Barangay Pance in Ramos town and Barangay Sta. Ines in Paniqui town, both in Tarlac province, are currently enrolled in the season-long Fish Farmers Field School (FFS), which will instruct them in practical applications of freshwater polyculture technology, according to BFAR-3 Regional Director Wilfredo Cruz on Thursday.

‘Layunin ng BFAR, sa pamamagitan ng FFS, na ituro sa mga mangingisda ang pinakabagong teknolohiya na magpapaunlad sa kanilang operasyon at kabuhayan bilang mga magsasaka ng isda,’ said the FFS representative. In an interview, Cruz stated that the BFAR’s goal was to “teach fishermen the newest technology that will improve their operation and livelihood as fish farmers.”

According to him, the program intends to instruct students on using freshwater polyculture technology to raise tilapia and “ulang” (prawn) in the same pond.

He said that producing two or more non-competing species in the same production area is known as polyculture.

According to him, “non-competing” refers to fish not hunting one another down or engaging in direct food competition.

The construction of artificial prawn shelters and the preparation of ponds, according to Cruz, are both parts of the training.

BFAR, the National Freshwater Fisheries Technology Center, the Provincial Agriculture Office, other partner organizations, and the corporate sector will all provide resource speakers for the 16-week FFS.

Cruz continued, “It is the desire of the BFAR to teach fishermen the technologies that could enhance their way of life. Nais ng BFAR na maituro sa mga mangingisda ang mga teknolohiyang magpapabuti sa kanilang kabuhayan.”
