SMC anticipates the Ilijan power plant will resume in May.

By reintegrating the 1,200 MW Ilijan natural gas plant into the national grid by May 26, which is the goal date, the nation’s power supply is anticipated to be stabilized in light of the anticipated high demand during the summer and in the years to come.

The nation’s first-ever liquefied natural gas shipment was recently delivered to San Miguel Corp. through its power arm SMC Global Power Holdings Corp. (SMGP), which will fuel its Ilijan power plant.

The country’s first LNG import terminal is being built by leading global LNG terminals and downstream infrastructure company Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific International Holdings (AG&P). SMC president Ramon S. Ang said in a statement Friday that he is optimistic about meeting the target date.

“With the return of the Ilijan power plant to the electrical grid, the nation’s security of energy supply for the upcoming summer and beyond will be improved. We should have more than enough capacity for the remainder of the year, and consumers won’t have to deal with brownouts or supply rotations, he added if all available power facilities are running. No plants encounter breakdowns or unexpected shutdowns.

Since June of last year, the SC38 consortium-operated Malampaya natural gas facility has stopped supplying gas to the Ilijan plant, which has been out of commission for an extended period while retrofitting work is being done.

This is true even though SMGP paid USD 1.2 billion for the government-owned Philippine National Oil Company’s (PNOC) remaining banked gas supply, which has yet to be delivered, despite a significant reduction in Malampaya gas supply for the Ilijan plant under its original gas supply agreement last year.

The energy industry, and eventually the consumers, have had to deal with a limited supply of power and increased prices during the Ilijan plant’s prolonged outage.

Historically, up to 10% of Luzon’s net reliable capacity has come from Ilijan.

According to Ang, the LNG shipment, totaling 137,000 billion cubic meters (bcm), had been sitting at Subic Bay’s floating storage unit (FSU) to construct the LNG terminal’s jetty facilities and the full-scale LNG terminal.

The FSU eventually berthed and linked to the LNG terminal following the recent completion of the jetty infrastructure, beginning the facility’s commissioning process.

The facility’s cryogenic pipes had to cool down to provide processed natural gas, which would later be used as fuel for the Ilijan plant.

As the Philippines accelerates the importation of LNG as part of the government’s attempts to maintain supply security and move to greener sources of power, the new terminal is the first of, ideally, many that will be opened this year.

LNG is a “transition” fuel that enables nations to responsibly transition away from coal power while aiming for broader adoption of renewable energy over the long term. This is done without jeopardizing the ongoing requirement of people and economies for affordable and dependable baseload power.

The main problem with renewable energy is intermittent ness or the unreliability of sources like sunlight and wind.

One of the world’s largest grid-scale battery storage networks, the 1,000 MW countrywide Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), was recently unveiled by the SMGP as a remedy for intermittent power generation.

Along with investments in renewable energy and expanding its LNG capacities, SMC’s BESS is a component of SMGP’s larger energy transition plan.

The new 1,313-MW Batangas Combined Cycle Gas Plant and the 1,200-MW Ilijan plant, owned by SMGP, are situated on each side of the new LNG terminal in Batangas Bay.
