DOTr begins construction on two additional Metro Manila subway stations.

Following a groundbreaking ceremony organized by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Friday, two additional Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) stations are now formally under construction.

The two stations, Quezon and East Avenues are part of Contract Package (CP) 102 of the MMSP and were given to a partnership between D. M. Consunji Inc. and Nishimatsu Construction Company Limited.

The tunnel boring machine (TBM) will be drilled sometime in the fourth quarter of 2024. Digging and constructing the tunnel and subterranean stations will start on April 30.

The “build-only” contract entails the construction of a 3.1-kilometer tunnel train and two underground stations to connect commuters to the core business center, public buildings, and private institutions in Quezon City.

DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista stated during the ceremony that the MMSP would not only offer luxurious transportation but also create jobs.

It will undoubtedly be cozy, economical, secure, sustainable, and easily accessible, according to Bautista.

He also thanked Japan for providing funds for the nation’s first subway system.

“We would like to reiterate our gratitude to the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the loan package that makes it possible for the very first subway train system of the Philippines,” he said.

The DOTr started the MMSP’s development in earnest in January by starting the tunneling for CP 101, which entails building three stations and a depot in Valenzuela City.

Valenzuela City and Paranaque City will be connected by the 33.1-kilometer-long MMSP, which has 17 stations and includes a spur line to Pasay City’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3.

Once finished, the subway, which has a daily capacity of up to 519,000 passengers, will allow travelers to reach Pasay City from Valenzuela City in just 45 minutes instead of the current 1 hour and 38 minutes.
