NegOr plans a widespread immunization campaign for 148K children.

The statewide “Chikiting Ligtas” mass immunization campaign against measles, rubella (MR), and polio is aimed at 148,201 kids in Negros Oriental for the entire month of May.

The month-long “Chikiting Ligtas” (Safe Children) supplemental immunization program was officially begun in Sibulan town on Tuesday, the day after Labor Day, according to provincial health officer Dr. Liland Estacion.

According to Estacion, the province has an adequate supply of measles and rubella vaccines.

However, only a small number of geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA) in the province have been identified for the oral polio vaccination (OPV), she explained, due to the Department of Health’s (DOH) limited supply.

These include the remote barangays in Guihulngan City, Tanjay City, Mabinay, and Sta. Catalina.

The oral polio vaccine will be administered to children aged 0 to 59 months, and the measles-rubella vaccination will be administered to children aged 9 to 59 months.

Estacion, meanwhile, declared that the province would make an effort to immunize at least 75% of the overall target population in Negros Oriental for the “Chikiting Ligtas” campaign because she thinks it would be too challenging to meet the 95% national target established by the DOH.

“The 95 percent national target is too high and not ideal for Negros Oriental due to the presence of GIDAs, which means that there are remote areas that cannot be accessed for a variety of reasons, such as the lack of nurses,” she added in part Filipino.

The communist insurrection is also affecting several GIDAs, which could jeopardize the safety of medical personnel transporting vaccines.

However, Estacion pledged that they would make every effort to reach the goal.

Families that can afford to have their children inoculated at private clinics or hospitals may do so, she said, notwithstanding the DOH’s minimal demand.

In any case, Estacion urged the parents to have their kids immunized because vaccines shield them from diseases that may be avoided.
