The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported on Tuesday afternoon that the active vents on the crater and summit area of the Bulusan Volcano were emitting very weak to weak white steam-laden plumes.

It also mentioned the possibility of a steam-driven or phreatic eruption from any of the active vents being triggered by the volcanic gas activity inside the structure.

Since May 7, Bulusan Volcano has registered at least 17 volcanic earthquakes. In contrast to tectonic earthquakes, which are brought on by fault movement, volcanic earthquakes are brought on by the movement or eruption of magma from the volcano.

According to a warning from Phivolcs, six tornillo occurrences were linked to the passage of volcanic gas, and 11 were volcano-tectonic earthquakes related to rock-fracturing. Tornillos are low-frequency earthquakes that leave a seismograph pattern resembling a screw.

These suggest volcanic gas activity is occurring beneath the structure, according to Phivolcs.

Phreatic eruptions are still possible even though Bulusan Volcano is still at Alert Level 0 (normal).

The general population and the local government are cautioned to stay out of the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone since there could be a sudden and dangerous steam-driven or phreatic eruption, rockfall, or landslide. This warning is especially important near the vents on the south-southeastern slopes.

In the event of intense and persistent rainfall, Phivolcs cautioned those who live in valleys and along river/stream channels to be cautious of lahars and sediment-filled stream flows.

Pilots are advised against flying too close to the volcano’s top since any phreatic eruption’s ash could pose a risk to flying objects.

Since January 18, Bulusan Volcano has been at a low alert level.
