For the period of January through April of this year, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) met its collecting target.

BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. said in a statement on Wednesday that BIR “recorded a historic feat” in meeting the collection target for the first four months of the year.

Earlier, BIR established a collection goal of PHP826.8 billion for the period from January to April of this year, however, the precise amount was not made public.

“We achieved our objective for January through April 2023. This achievement has only been accomplished a few times in the past 30 years. Given that we are still recuperating from the economic effects of the epidemic, this is a significant and historic beginning for the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Lumagui added.

He claimed that the agency’s four main programs were mostly responsible for the collection record.

“We just need to address four areas of concern during this term. Enhancing Enforcement Activities, Serving Taxpayers, Maintaining Integrity and Professionalism, and Digitalization, he said.

“Correcting these problems will advance the BIR. If we take care of these issues, I have no doubt that the BIR will meet its collection target for 2023.

The BIR has set a collection goal of PHP2.6 trillion for this year.

The BIR’s income target of PHP 2.1 trillion was exceeded by more than PHP 500 million last year.
