156 Filipinos in Sudan are prepared to return home: DFA

As the violent conflict between the Sudanese military and a paramilitary organization continues, 156 Filipinos in Sudan have requested to be repatriated, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

“According to our embassy, more than 500 messages have been sent to them. Out of the 500+, 156 were available at any time to send them a message, according to our embassy there. In a television interview, DFA Undersecretary Eduardo Jose de Vega stated that 156 people out of the more than 500 are prepared to return home at any time.

Only about 300 Filipinos are listed as registered residents of Sudan, he said.

However, there may currently be up to 700 Filipino residents there, the majority of whom are undocumented.

The 156 Filipinos who wish to return home, according to De Vega, “are not illegal or undocumented.”

“Meron silang passport at visa (They have a passport and a visa),” he continued.

As the DFA rents vehicles to transfer additional Filipinos out of Sudan, the repatriation will start soon.

The distance between Khartoum and Cairo, where the embassy is located, as well as the inability of the administration to determine a safe land path for the Filipinos to evacuate, according to President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., over the weekend.

The Filipinos could either go to Port Sudan, where boats run to Saudi Arabia, or they could go to the Egyptian border, where a team would take them to Aswan and then take a flight to Manila, according to De Vega.

No Filipino casualties in Sudan, he claimed.

As of April 23, the conflicts that erupted, particularly in Khartoum City and the Darfur Region, had resulted in at least 420 fatalities and more over 3,700 injuries.
