The Land Transportation Office’s (LTO) free theoretical driving course (TDC), which launched simultaneously across the country on Thursday, has so far attracted 3,209 student drivers.

The gratis theoretical training, according to LTO chief assistant secretary Jose Arturo Tugade, is a part of the LTO’s initiatives to “promote road safety and motor vehicle roadworthiness.”

“We at the LTO are completely aware of the financial difficulties many Filipinos encounter when trying to pay TDC costs. Additionally, we noticed that more of our people were interested in learning to drive as a potential source of income, according to Tugade.

The initiative was introduced in time for the agency’s 111th founding anniversary.

Although there are restrictions on how many children can attend the program from Thursday to Friday, there are plans to repeat the event every month.

To continuously generate LTO driving scholars, “this launch will initiate the regular monthly distribution of free TDCs at all regional offices,”

Through Memorandum Circular 2023-2390, the LTO limited the cost of TDCs provided by driving schools to PHP1,000 for both motorcycles and four-wheeled vehicles.

While PHP2,500 is the maximum price for practical driving training for motorcycles, PHP4,000 is the maximum for light vehicles, and PHP8,000 is the maximum for large vehicles including trucks, buses, and other articulated vehicles.

Before a student driver can obtain a professional or non-professional driver’s license, they must complete both driving courses.
