According to a statement released on Saturday by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Philippines seeks to increase its involvement in the global value chain for electronics and electricity, particularly concerning wafer technology and R&D.

The electronics sector specializes in manufacturing assembly, testing, packaging, and distribution and is already a significant contributor to the nation’s exports, according to DTI Assistant Secretary Allan Gepty.

He stated during the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City, “[A]ng partisipasyon natin diyan ay unang-una sa pag-assemble halimbawa ng mga electronic product at iyong tinatawag nating testing (Our participation there is in the assembly for example of electronic products and what we term testing).

He continued, “In this value chain, there are two other aspects that we are aiming for research and development and what they refer to as wafer technology production.

According to Gepty, acquiring the two extra steps in the value chain would further expand the industry in the nation.

He said it would be fantastic for the electronic business since we have already created a specialization in that particular sector.

Raw materials, electronic and electrical components (such as semiconductor wafers and bare circuit boards), subassemblies, and finished goods comprise the bulk of the global value chain.

It also covers tasks that improve the quality of the finished goods, like software integration, circuitry design, and research and development.

Gepty stated that DTI will keep promoting the development of manufacturing and assembly for finished goods.
