Rice Congress will address new risks to productivity.

The Philippines will serve as the inaugural host nation for the upcoming 6th International Rice Congress (IRC), which will concentrate on offering comprehensive, scientifically based solutions to the effects of conflict, extreme weather events, and economic shocks to the rice value chain.

From October 16 to October 19, the quadrennial IRC will occur at the Philippine International Convention Centre (PICC) in Pasay City.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is a co-organizer.

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) director general, Jean Balié, said on Tuesday, “We look forward to meeting long-term colleagues and collaborators as well as new actors in the agri-food, climate change, and nutrition sector and learning from each other.

This year’s symposium focuses on “Accelerating Transformation of Rice-Based Food Systems: From Gene to Globe.”

Beijing (2002), New Delhi (2006), Hanoi (2010), Bangkok (2014), and Singapore (2018) hosted prior IRC events.

Participants can anticipate learning about “recent advancements in genetic, digital, and nature-based solutions, offering valuable insights to address the various challenges faced by the rice industry in the Philippines,” according to Undersecretary Leocadio Sebastian, who oversees the DA’s rice industry development division.

He emphasized that the IRC is in charge of achieving food self-sufficiency and enhancing Filipino farmers’ lives, two of the Philippine government’s top priorities.

The International Rice Congress (IRC) is the largest gathering of rice researchers, industry professionals, decision-makers, businesspeople, and other interested parties from academia and civil society.

According to the Rome-based Global Forum on Agricultural Research, the event enables international stakeholders in rice research and production to “share the results of their work; intelligence on market trends, drivers, and developments; and together learn about factors that affect the rice industry and technologies in the short and long term.”
