On Thursday, a scientist from Balik stated his desire for the Center for Sustainable Polymers (CSP), now only accessible in Region 10, to become a national center accessible to all regions.

Robert Malaluan, a scientist from Balik, stated that he is seeking government assistance with this project.

The CSP, based at Mindanao State University-Iligan State of Technology, was supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) as a regional specialized center for sustainable polymers.

Malaluan stated in a public briefing that “the nation has a lot of polymers, and we could make these into a high-value product.”

He gave CocoFlexSorb, a product of the CSP that aims to assist in controlling the oil spill in Mindoro, as an illustration. According to reports, this bio-based polyurethane foam has a superior capacity for absorbing oil and can absorb various oils, including vegetable, kerosene, motor, and bunker oil.

CSP program director Arnold Lubguban stated at the same briefing that this breakthrough costs four to five times less than current petroleum-based absorbents. Additionally, the coco foam can be used 20 to 30 times.

Malaluan claimed that the CSP is now working on more goods.

“We are not just studying coconut oil, but also other biopolymers, sustainable polymers that we aim to convert into high-value products,” he said.

According to Lubguban, the country is rich in natural resources that may be obtained from the sea, trees, and vegetable oils. These resources are abundant in the nation. He said that we require more research facilities and laboratories to produce more items to boost our economy.

He continued by encouraging other colleges to use the DOST method to set up small laboratories as well.

Malaluan claims that the CSP is a cutting-edge lab where small and medium-sized businesses can test their items. The laboratory is equipped to characterize certain materials.
