El Nino prepared LGUs in Metro Manila: MMDA

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Metro Manila Disaster Risk Response and Management Council (MMDRRMC) are working with local governments to draw up emergency plans to anticipate the El Nino phenomenon and the potential for a water crisis.

Don Artes, the interim chair of the MMDA and concurrent head of the MMDRRMC, stated at a press conference on Friday that each of the 17 local government units (LGU) in the National Capital Region (NCR) has established a task force to develop emergency plans.

According to Artes, each task force would present their suggested plans to the Metro Manila Council (MMC), which would then discuss them at a meeting that would take place before the end of May.

“Recommendations will be consolidated and coordinated with the concerned government agencies for possible implementation and replication of efforts in other regions,” he declared.

The MMDA works in tandem with the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) to monitor the water supply and manage water use in the NCR.

To recycle the treated wastewater from different sewerage treatment plants, he added, “We are also coordinating with the MWSS.”

The MMDA is also considering buying a machine to draw moisture from the air and filter it to create drinkable water.

There is a 90% possibility that the El Nino phenomena will persist through the first quarter of 2024, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

The likelihood of El Nino reaching “a strong level” in the latter half of 2023 is 53%, it was noted.

El Nino is the anomalous rise in sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central equatorial Pacific Ocean.

The MMDA also monitors the water level in the NCR’s waterways and provides training in water search and rescue to responders and rescuers from various LGUs.

He said that all 71 pumping stations were fully functional and that ongoing declogging works were carried out to lessen flooding in the city.

It also recently purchased four boats for use in rescue efforts.
