Iloilo City hopes to host the 2023 bar examinations.
The regional government is asking the Supreme Court to consider opening an LTC in Iloilo City for the 2023 bar examinations.
In a letter to Associate Justice Ramon Paul I. Hernando, the head of the 2023 bar examinations, Mayor Jerry P. Treas claimed that Western Visayas, particularly Iloilo City, had demonstrated its capacity to be an LTC by hosting hundreds of candidates for the 2020โ2021 bar examination at the Central Philippine University (CPU).
“You mentioned Iloilo City as a potential LTC in your letter dated February 1, 2023, to the Philippine Association of Law Schools (PAL), so we were expecting that there would be one in the area, particularly for the 2023 bar examinations in Iloilo City.
In a letter dated May 18 and provided to the public on Friday, he stated: “Unfortunately, none of the three tentative LTCs listed in Bar Bulletin No. 3, which was posted today, are in Iloilo City or even Region VI.
According to the mayor, Western Visayas is home to seven law schools, including CPU, University of San Agustin, West Visayas State University in Iloilo City, Colegio de La Purisima Concepcion in Capiz, University of Negros Occidental Recoletos, and Aklan College in Aklan.
He continued, “Iloilo City is home to three law schools and is accessible to graduates of the four other law schools in Region VI.”
Candidates for the bar from this region will be at an “enormous disadvantage” due to the absence of LTC in the city.
He claimed that to take the bar exams in other areas, individuals would have to incur more costs and move away from their families and places of employment.
“The costs will be material and emotional, psychological, and physical,” he continued.
Out of the 3,992 people that passed the 2022 bar exam, more than 100 new lawyers were generated by the two law schools in Iloilo City.
Three of the 14 potential LTCs, including two from Cebu and one from Tacloban, were from the Visayas.
Six LTCs were located in the National Capital Region, three in Luzon, and two in Mindanao, among other LTCs.
