DPWH will build more rainwater collectors vs. wet season, El Niño

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Thursday stated it would develop more rainwater collecting systems (RWCs) statewide as the wet season and El Niño near.

In a statement, DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan said it’s high time to provide RWCs in public facilities to help mitigate the impact of climate threats.

He said that the need to construct disaster-resilient infrastructure that will help harvest rainwater intended for agriculture, commercial, and domestic use is increased by the rainy season and the threat of El Nino.

The RWCs are anticipated to help the nation manage flooding and water supply issues.

Bonoan, meanwhile, ordered all the Regional and District Engineering Offices to secure the list of proposed beneficiaries of RWC.

The total serving population that will benefit from the project and lessens the daily burden of individuals in places with physical water scarcity can be calculated using the list of potential beneficiaries, according to Bonoan.

This year, a PHP582.9-million fund has been provided for RWCs nationwide under the DPWH’s INFRAgenda 2028.

The regions having the largest allotments are Calabarzon, Bicol, and Western Visayas, each receiving PHP47.64 million; Central Luzon and Central Visayas, each receiving PHP44.84 million; and Eastern Visayas, receiving PHP42.04 million.

The budget for the following regions ranges from PHP25.22 million to PHP39.23 million each.
