Phivolcs forewarn residents of Taal about acid rain and volcanic smog.
As the Taal Main Crater continues to release gas, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued a warning on Wednesday about a massive volcanic smog (or “vog”) active forming over the Taal Caldera and its neighboring areas.
In a report released at 11 a.m., Phivolcs claimed to have seen volcanic fluids visibly upwell in Main Crater Lake and generate massive steam-rich plumes that rose 2,000 meters above Taal Volcano Island.
Vog comprises tiny droplets of volcanic gas, which can irritate the eyes, throat, and respiratory system to varying degrees depending on exposure times and gas concentrations.
According to the Phivolcs, the Taal region could experience vog as long as degassing, mild wind movement, and a humid atmosphere are present.
Additionally, it stated that on June 6, an average of 7,680 tonnes of volcanic sulfur dioxide emissions were observed. On June 5, this average was 9,391 tonnes.
Phivolcs advises the nearby populations to avoid outside activities, close the windows and doors, and limit their exposure to vog.
In order to lessen the discomfort of the throat, they are also advised to use an N95 mask and drink lots of water.
People with health issues like asthma, lung disease, and heart disease, as well as the elderly, pregnant women, and children, may be particularly sensitive to vog, according to Phivolcs. She added that these individuals should seek medical attention from a doctor or a barangay health unit, especially if they experience serious effects.
Additionally, Phivolcs said that during rainfall and volcanic gas production, acid rain can form over regions where the plume disperses, harming crops and corroding metal roofs on homes and other structures.
Since July 11, 2022, Taal Volcano has been on Alert Level 1 (abnormal). Areas within TVI may be threatened by sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfalls, and fatal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas.
Entry inside TVI, particularly the areas near the Main Crater and the Daang Kastila fissure is still forbidding, according to Phivolcs.
Additionally, local government units are urged to regularly inspect the barangays evacuated near Taal Lake for damage and poor road access and to bolster their preparedness, contingency, and communication plans in case of further unrest.
Due to potential ash fall, mild earthquakes, and ground movement across cracks, people are recommended to take measures.
Over the weekend, more degassing activity was noticed in Taal.
The Taal Volcano’s abrupt eruption might endanger aircraft up to 10,000 feet in the air, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines warned pilots on Monday.
On Wednesday, the provincial government of Batangas likewise advised citizens to exercise caution due to the Taal Volcano’s ongoing vog discharge.
Hermilando Mandanas, the governor of Batangas, reminded citizens living close to the volcano to carefully observe cautions issued by the Phivolcs in a text message to the Philippine News Agency.
Prior Phivolcs recommendations warning that vog may be dangerous to the elderly and pregnant women and even cause metal roofing material to deteriorate were the source of Mandanas’ worries.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office’s Dr. Amor Banuelos-Calayan assured that her office is “monitoring the situation 24/7.”
