The NIA promotes “triple cropping” to increase food security.

According to the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), the government is encouraging triple cropping or growing three distinct crops on the same piece of land to increase food security in the nation.

According to a statement from the NIA, triple cropping is possible on the irrigated farmlands of the nation and might eventually support the growth of farm management in the Philippines.

The article said, “Adopting the technique of multiple cropping on irrigation systems can help reduce hunger, lower input costs generally, and control pests, weed growth, and disease infestation.

Additionally, the cropping strategy complemented the government’s efforts to aid farmlands damaged by Super Typhoon Karding.

The NIA stated that the initiative intends to foster the Bayanihan spirit among NIA personnel, local government officials, and farmers on irrigation system operation and maintenance tasks, particularly canal clearing, dredging, and desilting works following the onslaught of Super Typhoon Karding.

According to NIA chief Benny Antiporda, triple cropping is feasible if the NIA, farmers, and other stakeholders work well together.

According to the NIA, it wants to adopt Central Luzon’s triple cropping.

The DA-Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) estimates that 163,162 agricultural lands have lost rice output this year, costing around PHP2.05 billion.

The most significant damage and volume loss in rice production occurred in Nueva Ecija, followed by Tarlac, Pampanga, Laguna, and Quezon.

Central Luzon continued to generate the most palay during the first quarter of 2022, achieving 772,855 metric tons of palay production.
