BIR warns consumers about unreliable online TIN card sellers.
The taxpayer identity number (TIN) card should not be purchased from internet vendors, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) advised the public on Monday.
The BIR reissued the warning after learning that numerous people are providing TIN ID help via Facebook, Shopee, Lazada, and other online selling platforms.
“These offers of TIN ID assistance published on selling platforms or online channels are not approved by the BIR and are thus regarded as unlawful. Please don’t let these offers fool you or lead you astray, Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr.
The BIR claimed that last month, its Client Support Service spoke with officials of Shopee and Lazada to draw their notice to these unlawful practices and demand that they immediately take down any advertisements or postings offering TIN ID assistance.
The BIR only issues or releases TIN cards through its authorized personnel; they are not for sale. Because they are regarded as unlawful, fraudulent, and false, do not obtain TINs or TIN cards from unlicensed BIR employees, non-BIR employees, or through Facebook, Shopee, Lazada, or other online selling platforms, Lumagui said.
The BIR reaffirmed that obtaining a TIN or TIN card is free and does not require outside services.
Lumagui encouraged the public to only conduct business with authorized revenue officials at the Revenue District Office (RDO) having jurisdiction over their residence and to adhere to the prescribed process for acquiring both to verify the validity and authenticity of the TIN and TIN card being issued.
Additionally, he emphasized the need for everyone to use caution while providing personal information online to avoid identity theft and other cybercrimes.
“The BIR is still dedicated to upholding the tax system’s integrity and ensuring that all tax laws are followed. We kindly request that public members assist us by alerting the BIR about any TINs or TIN IDs sellers by calling our hotline at (02) 8538-3200 or emailing us to contact_us@bir.gov.ph. You are assisting the BIR in stopping this illegal practice by reporting such actions, Lumagui stated.
Since 2019, the BIR regional and district offices have conducted several entrapment operations and arrested vendors of TIN ID assistance services in Laoac, Pangasinan; Cebu City; Bukidnon; Gumaca, Quezon; Pila, Cabuyao; and Sta. Rosa, Laguna, as well as the Cordillera Administrative Region.
The criminals were captured, and legal action was taken to guarantee that the proper punishments were meted out.
