The Department of Tourism (DOT) announced on Saturday that the 36th Joint Commission Meeting for East Asia and the Pacific and the Commission for South Asia would be held in Cebu, Philippines, the following year.

The winning proposal was revealed Friday in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, at the 55th Meeting of the UNWTO Regional Commission for East Asia and the Pacific.

Manila was chosen to serve as vice president of the UNWTO General Assembly and chair of the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific during the same meeting.

The nation will preside over the sessions to address regional issues as chair.

The Philippines was last elected vice president of the UNWTO General Assembly in 1999, according to the DOT.

The country is prepared to play a leading role in the global tourist scene, according to tourist Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, who spoke in front of the tourism ministries of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Maldives, and Cambodia, as well as senior UNWTO officials.

According to Frasco, the Philippines should develop into a tourism powerhouse in Asia. As we usher in a golden era of tourism for our areas to become the powerhouse regions in the world, we cannot wait to partner and collaborate with all of you.

She remarked that the nation eagerly anticipates hosting the UNWTO member states in 2024.

She also praised Cebu, the venue of the event, for being the birthplace of Christianity in the region and for having Asia’s Best Airport in the five million passenger category of the renowned Routes Asia awards.
