π PBBM’s Lifting of Covid-19 Public Health Emergency Expected Soon: DOH π«π¦
Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa stated on Tuesday that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will soon sign an order officially lifting the state of public health emergency declared due to the Covid-19 pandemic. When asked by Palace reporters, Herbosa confirmed that they are still awaiting the formal order from Marcos.
Herbosa explained that he is waiting for Marcos’ approval of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) resolution, which was issued before his appointment as health chief in June. The signing of the resolution has been delayed as the Office of the President needed to consider the potential consequences of lifting the public health emergency status, particularly its impact on the use of Covid-19 vaccines.
However, Herbosa mentioned that the obstacle has been overcome, noting that Marcos’ initial instruction to him upon assuming the Department of Health (DOH) portfolio was to “get out of the Covid pandemic.” While an official announcement is yet to be made, Herbosa stated that the Chief Executive already considers the Philippines to be de facto not under a state of public health emergency.
According to Herbosa, after the World Health Organization (WHO) ended the global public health emergency status for Covid-19, medical professionals now view Covid-19 as one of the respiratory illnesses. He emphasized the importance for the Filipino people, especially the vulnerable sector, to continue protecting themselves from the disease. Vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those with medical conditions, still face the risk of death.
Former President Rodrigo Duterte declared a state of public health emergency on March 8, 2020, when the first Covid-19 transmission was reported by the DOH. In May, Marcos stated that the country was already on a normal footing after the WHO lifted the global state of public health emergency.
