🎌 Japan honors ex-DND chief Lorenzana with Order of the Rising Sun 🌅

Former Defense Secretary and current BCDA Chairperson Delfin Lorenzana have been awarded The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by the Japanese government in recognition of his instrumental role in strengthening the defense ties between the Philippines and Japan.

The ceremony, held in Makati City on June 30, saw Japanese Ambassador Koshikawa Kazuhiko bestowing the prestigious national decoration on behalf of Japan Emperor Naruhito, as announced by the BCDA on Tuesday.

The Order of the Rising Sun has been awarded by Japan since 1875 to both Japanese and foreign individuals who have made outstanding achievements in their respective fields.

Ambassador Koshikawa praised Lorenzana’s exceptional leadership and progressive accomplishments, stating that the award symbolizes the Japanese government’s deepest appreciation for his remarkable contributions. He commended Lorenzana’s unwavering commitment and hard work in strengthening the defense relationship between the two countries.

Under Lorenzana’s leadership as Secretary of the Department of National Defense (DND) for six years, significant advancements were made, including the signing of the Implementing Arrangements concerning the Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology.

During this time, Japan provided various military equipment to the Philippines, including five TC90 maritime reconnaissance aircraft for the Philippine Navy, search and rescue equipment for the Philippine Army, and PHP1-billion worth of UH1H or “Huey” helicopter spare parts for the Philippine Air Force.

Moreover, Lorenzana played a crucial role in procuring four air surveillance radar systems, valued at USD103 million, for the Philippine Air Force from Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 2018.

His dedication extended beyond equipment transfers, as he actively participated in the first 2+2 Defense and Foreign Affairs ministerial meetings in Tokyo in April 2022. These meetings served as a platform for meaningful discussions on shared interests between Manila and Tokyo.

Expressing his gratitude, Lorenzana acknowledged the enduring support, friendship, and belief in the bilateral relations between the people and nation of Japan and the Philippines.
