A PHP4.7 million swine artificial insemination sa barangay (SWAIB) facility project is set to be constructed in Malinao town, Albay province. The facility aims to enhance hog quality and production in the province.

Dr. Pancho Mella, head of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), announced on Wednesday that the project, which commenced groundbreaking on Tuesday, is a grant provided by the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI). Its purpose is to elevate the quality of swine production.

“The facility is expected to be completed within 120 days. It will include a pen with a capacity for 10 boars, a laboratory for semen processing, and a storage room,” shared Mella during an interview.

As a grant, the project will be paid for by offering free services to farmers engaged in hog production.

“We won’t be paying them in cash, but the method of payment will be through providing free services to farmers with female hogs. We will supply 2,600 free semen samples from the 10 boars designated as breeders,” Mella explained.

Aside from increasing the number of hogs raised, the facility aims to improve the overall quality of the hogs.

“Previously, we relied on natural breeding methods. However, with artificial insemination, the quality of hogs will be significantly enhanced in terms of weight, meat production, and disease resistance,” he added.

In addition to the facility, the provincial government of Albay will allocate funding for farmers’ training.

Albay currently has 27,000 registered livestock farmers. 🐖🏗️
