🌩️ NEDA Exec: Gov’t Ready to Mitigate El Niño Impact on Economy 💪
An official from the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) has stated that the government is well-prepared to handle the effects of El Niño, ensuring minimal impact on inflation and the economy.
Undersecretary Rosemarie Edillon expressed confidence in the country’s ability to cope with this weather phenomenon, citing the implementation of preparations and mitigation measures.
“El Niño occurs every three years. Its impact largely depends on our level of preparedness. Our people know how to deal with it, with support from government agencies,” Edillon shared at the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has directed government agencies to anticipate the potential consequences of El Niño, establish long-term solutions based on protocols and science, and launch a campaign to raise public awareness about water and energy conservation.
The Department of Agriculture is currently identifying areas that drought conditions could adversely affect. At the same time, the Department of Social Welfare and Development has stockpiled essential supplies, ready to be distributed with the assistance of local government units.
Edillon assured that financial aid would be provided when necessary, adding, “Based on our assessment, preparations are progressing well, and the government’s actions are on track.”
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has stated that the country has yet to experience the full impact of El Niño, which is anticipated to persist until the first quarter of 2024.
PAGASA Climate Monitoring chief Ana Liza Solis explained that the current El Niño is still weak, but there is a 56% probability that it will intensify to a moderate to strong level by the last quarter of 2023.
El Niño increases the likelihood of below-normal rainfall conditions, potentially leading to dry spells and droughts in certain areas of the country, as stated by PAGASA. They have identified 36 provinces, primarily in Luzon (including Metro Manila) and some Visayas regions that may experience three consecutive months of below-normal rainfall starting in December.
