Phivolcs Chief: Mayon Volcano Activity Intensifies, Urges Preparedness
The leader of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned on Monday that Mayon Volcano is currently undergoing heightened activity. Residents residing within a 7 to 8-kilometer radius of the volcano are advised to be prepared if the pyroclastic density current (PDC) activity worsens.
Phivolcs reported that since 5 p.m. on July 9, 33 PDCs, consisting of fast-moving mixtures of volcanic gases, ash, and rock fragments, have been generated due to dome collapse from Mayon Volcano’s summit crater. Additionally, collapsing front and margins of the advancing lava flow on the upper to middle slopes have contributed to the PDCs.
“In this situation, the 33 PDCs were produced when the lava dome on the volcano’s summit collapsed and also as the lava flows moved downward,” stated Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol in an interview with the Philippine News Agency.
The PDCs traveled for approximately one to four minutes down the Mi-isi and Bonga Gullies, reaching a distance of 3.3 kilometers from the crater, according to Phivolcs.
Phivolcs also observed a significant increase in sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions on July 9, as detected by satellite monitors. However, the SO2 emissions measured through surveys averaged 943 tonnes on the same day.
“These measurements are still relatively low compared to the amount of SO2 released during previous eruptions, which ranged from 3,000 to 7,000 tonnes per day,” Bacolcol explained, noting that the current figure is slightly above the background level.
Furthermore, Phivolcs mentioned that the measured volcanic gas flux has only slightly exceeded the background level over the past three days, remaining much lower than the typical ranges during eruptions of Mayon Volcano.
Since 5 a.m. on Monday, 109 weak low-frequency volcanic earthquakes have been recorded. Still, the seismic energy release has remained generally consistent since June 15, according to Phivolcs.
Bacolcol previously stated that even if the number of earthquakes increases, but they remain weak, the volcano’s alert level would still be maintained.
Mayon Volcano is under Alert Level 3 due to an increased likelihood of a hazardous eruption.
The Phivolcs chief emphasized the importance of maintaining the evacuation of the 6-kilometer radius permanent danger zone.
In the meantime, aviation authorities are strongly advised to inform pilots to steer clear of the volcano’s summit as volcanic ash from eruptions can pose a risk to aircraft.
