In a statement, the DA announced the various assistance that will be provided to affected farmers and fishers, including the distribution of rice, corn, and assorted vegetable seeds, as well as drugs and biologics for livestock and poultry. Additionally, the agency will implement the Survival and Recovery (SURE) Program of the Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC) and allocate funds from the Quick Response Fund (QRF) for the rehabilitation of affected areas.
This response comes as standing crops, particularly rice, and corn, in four regions are at risk due to the cyclone.
The DA-Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) Operations Center’s bulletin issued at 3 p.m. highlighted that over 700,000 hectares of land in the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and Cordillera may be affected.
According to combined data from Regions I, II, III, and CAR (Cordillera Administrative Region), the total area of standing crops that Tropical Depression Dodong could impact amounts to 421,153 hectares (78.80 percent of the national standing crops) for rice and 302,690 hectares (71.09 percent of the national standing crops) for corn.
As of 5 p.m. on Friday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that Dodong was last tracked over the coastal waters of Laoag, Ilocos Norte.
Heavy rainfall ranging from 50 to 100 mm is expected from Friday to Saturday morning in Cagayan, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Benguet, Ilocos Norte, La Union, and Pangasinan.
Despite the challenges posed by the tropical cyclone, the weather bureau emphasized that the rains could benefit farmers and fisherfolk in certain areas along its path.
