France wants more maritime interactions in PH to promote peace.
France is actively pursuing greater maritime interactions in the Indo-Pacific region, including the Philippines, to promote peace and stability. As announced by outgoing French Ambassador Michele Boccoz during the Bastille Day reception in Makati City, the country plans to deploy additional naval assets, including the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, in 2025. These deployments aim to strengthen partnerships and foster cooperation amidst the region’s rising geopolitical tensions and uncertainties.
Boccoz emphasized France’s commitment to collaborating with like-minded states in promoting peace and stability. She revealed that preparations for future deployments are already underway, with important visits of carriers and aircraft carriers on the agenda. The ambassador highlighted the intention to gradually increase maritime interactions, signifying France’s dedication to enhancing its regional presence and engagement.
In addition to bolstering its naval capabilities, France intends to work closely with the Philippines on capacity building and technology transfers. This partnership will contribute to the development and modernization of the maritime sector. As a significant step towards closer cooperation, France participated this year for the first time as an observer in the “Balikatan” military exercises. It joined the multilateral “Sama-Sama” exercises to ensure the seas’ freedom and openness.
The recent goodwill visit of the French Navy Destroyer Lorraine to Manila further exemplifies the growing relationship between France and the Philippines. The visit was a goodwill gesture before the ship’s commissioning, underscoring France’s commitment to fostering bilateral ties and maritime cooperation.
Highlighting the increased interest in the Philippines, France plans to deploy a full-time resident defense attaché this year. This move signifies France’s intent to deepen its engagement and collaboration with the Philippines in defense and security matters.
Ambassador Boccoz expressed her firm belief in the significance of the France-Philippines relationship. Geographically close and sharing common values, France, as an Indo-Pacific nation with a substantial population in the region, is committed to democracy, a rules-based international order, and diplomacy. These shared values and geographic proximity lay a strong foundation for mutually beneficial cooperation and partnership.
France aims to contribute to regional peace, stability, and security through expanded maritime interactions, joint exercises, and diplomatic engagement. By working with like-minded states and deepening partnerships, France is dedicated to upholding a rules-based international order and fostering peaceful coexistence in the Indo-Pacific, particularly with the Philippines.
