SEC Encourages MSMEs to Explore Capital Market for Business Expansion 💼🚀

ILOILO CITY — To empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) underscored the importance of considering the capital market to expand their businesses. During the SEC roadshow on capital formation for MSMEs and start-ups held in Iloilo City, Commissioner Kelvin Lester Lee urged entrepreneurs to explore the capital market for their financing needs.

Commissioner Lee emphasized that catering to the needs of MSMEs remains a top priority for the administration. He highlighted that a significant portion of the country’s businesses—99.5 percent—are comprised of MSMEs. These entities, responsible for 63 percent of local workforce employment, also contribute 40 percent to the gross domestic product (GDP).

However, despite their significant contribution, many MSMEs face financing and credit challenges, with 67 percent encountering constraints. Many of these enterprises often rely on internal resources for capital. At the same time, those seeking traditional bank loans often grapple with obstacles such as document requirements, collateral demands, and high-interest rates.

Commissioner Lee stressed the importance of diversifying financing sources for MSMEs and providing them with viable alternatives. “At least this way, we can relay to the general public that if you engage in business, there are many options to raise capital to expand your business,” he mentioned during a press conference.

The roadshow brought together experts in crowdfunding and business practitioners who have successfully embarked on public offerings. They shared their expertise and experiences with participants, shedding light on the possibilities and advantages of tapping into the capital market.

Mayor Jerry Treñas of Iloilo City expressed his hope that this initiative would contribute to the city’s vision of becoming a bustling business hub. He believed the knowledge gained from the roadshow would empower local entrepreneurs to consider capital market solutions for their business expansion endeavors. “This roadshow will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration,” Mayor Treñas affirmed.

Notable personalities graced the event, including SEC Director Vicente Graciano Felizmenio Jr., Philippine Stock Exchange Chief Operating Officer Roel Refran, and SEC Iloilo Officer-in-Charge Director Ma. Cristina Montelibano. Their participation emphasized the collaborative effort between various entities to promote financial inclusivity and provide MSMEs with the necessary tools and insights to thrive in a dynamic economic landscape.

As MSMEs play a crucial role in fueling economic growth and employment opportunities, initiatives like the SEC roadshow underscore the importance of enabling these enterprises to access diverse funding sources, fostering innovation, and supporting their journey toward sustainable expansion.
