All PPA ports are working, even though there are more Covid-19 cases.

All of the Philippine Ports Authority’s (PPA) seaports and offices are still open, even though many of its employees have been found to have Covid-19.

During a Laging Handa briefing on Tuesday, the PPA’s general manager said that those who tested positive have been replaced by people who had been working from home, allowing the PPA’s offices to stay open and running.

It’s been a long time since we’ve called back the people who weren’t on the rotation this week, Santiago says. They can cover for the people who have been in isolation since yesterday, Santiago says.

On Tuesday, he said that five more PPA employees had positive Covid-19 antigen tests, adding to the 40 who had already been positive.

It doesn’t matter if they’ve been positive; they’re working from home because they aren’t sick.

There have been a lot of cases of Covid-19 recently, as well as damage caused by Typhoon Odette last December. All PPA ports are “commercially operational,” he said, though some port facilities are still being repaired.

We are short on amenities for passengers, Santiago said. “We started fixing them right away,” he said. “Nangkakaroon niyo ang problema sa mga amenities for us passengers,” he said.

He said that cargo operations have started again, but there is a small shortfall in operational vessels that is being worked on by the PPA, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), and the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

Some 13 special permits have been given out so that vessels can sail in the affected routes, Santiago said. MARINA has given out at least 13 of these special permits.

It is also important that “relief cargoes and RoRo vessels” and other vehicles used to help areas affected by “Odette” get through the PPA first, he said.

He said that all terminal charges and passenger terminal fees in all PPA ports will be waived from December 22, 2021, to January 22, 2022.

There will be no payment for terminal charges, Santiago said. “We hope that this will help speed up the response of our government agencies as well as those in the private sector who are helping with the relief efforts,” said Santiago.

He said that DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade has ordered more security and health checks by border security at all ports in the country to help fight the rise in Covid-19 cases in the country.

In our maritime vessels and terminal, we’re still at 70% capacity, and we’re also making sure that the seven commandments of public transportation are being obeyed.

To keep people safe, Santiago talked about transportation’s seven rules: don’t talk or eat, don’t have any food or drink in your mouth, have good ventilation, and keep people who are sick or Covid-19 positive isolated.
