On Wednesday, a legislator in the House of Representatives pushed for a bill that would award fully-vaccinated Filipino families with a one-time PHP15,000 monetary support to help the government’s coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) immunization program.

Rep. Alfred Vargas of Quezon City stated in a statement that House Bill 10644 will not only assist alleviate Filipinos’ sufferings during the two-year epidemic but also tackle the problem by boosting science-based vaccination and accelerating the attainment of herd immunity.

The bill proposes to add a financial aid program to the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) already existing social amelioration program.

“It emphasizes the poorest of the poor and our communities’ most vulnerable segments,” Vargas remarked. “These people include the elderly, people with impairments, and people with comorbidities.”

He stated that the scheme would cover all eligible Filipino families as long as all living and qualified members have followed the government’s vaccination schedule.

Vargas wrote in the bill’s explanatory note that greater social safety nets are needed to support and safeguard a variety of vulnerable groups from poverty.

He said that the proposed “Ayuda sa Bakuna” program will boost the government’s attempts to contain the epidemic by reducing vaccine apprehension.

“Vaccines help people live longer and healthier lives. That has already been demonstrated by our country’s vigorous vaccination campaign. The values of ‘bayanihan’ and ‘damayan’ are reflected in our ‘Ayuda sa Bakuna’ program. We must work together to defeat Covid-19 and reclaim our normal lives from this virus. We must make certain that no one is left behind “Vargas explained.
