The government of Taiwan has provided PHP25.47 million through the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) to assist the Philippine government in dealing with the devastation caused by Typhoon Odette.

Secretary Rolando Bautista of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said in a media interview on Wednesday that he received Taiwan’s donations on January 4 from MECO, a non-profit and non-stock private corporation with a mission to sustain and enhance mutually beneficial relationships between the Philippines and Taiwan’s economies and societies.

“These donations were made by MECO as a gesture of goodwill to assist the Philippine government in its relief efforts for the families affected by Typhoon Odette,” Bautista explained.

Bautista thanked MECO and the Taiwanese government for assisting the Philippines in recovering from the super typhoon that affected at least six areas in the Philippines, including Mindanao and Visayas.

In a hand-over ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan on Dec. 22, 2021, MECO chairman and resident representative Wilfredo Fernandez collected the disaster relief monies on behalf of the Philippine government from Taiwan Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaujhieh Joseph Wu.

MECO Vice Chairman Eddie Tamondong gave PHP6.7 million to the DSWD for the typhoon victims in addition to PHP25.47 million.

Taiwan’s government also helped the Philippines restore Marawi, a war-torn city in Mindanao, in January 2018.

The Philippines and Taiwan have a long history of friendship, according to MECO.

“According to a recent analysis, it has its origins 10,000 years ago and is thought to have come from either the Philippines or southeast China,” MECO added.
