On Wednesday, a politician in the House of Representatives asked the Department of Energy (DOE) to assure enough power supply in the summer, particularly during the May 2022 elections.

Rep. Fidel Nograles of Rizal made the petition after the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) predicted a shortage of energy during the dry season due to increasing consumption, which could influence the elections.

“We should do everything we can to avoid interruptions, particularly during election season.” We don’t want the May 2022 elections’ credibility to be jeopardized due to brownouts,” he stated.

He advised that if power facilities require preventative maintenance, the scheduling should be coordinated with the DOE so that they do not go offline at the same time.

“This has been going on for years, and I’m not sure why we haven’t figured out how to fix this annual problem of summer power outages,” he said.

As a stopgap measure, he believes the DOE should look at renewable energy sources.

“I believe that solar power systems are simple to establish in communities.” Why can’t the DOE do it? I’ve heard of NGOs (non-governmental groups) doing it. “This could even be the key to achieving our long-sought goal of 100 percent electrification,” he remarked.
