Balik Scientist portal has been launched.

Filipino scientists working abroad can now work remotely and apply for the Balik Scientist program via a portal that was launched on Friday.

While some of them are unable to return to the country due to the pandemic, they can still contribute and make a difference, according to Undersecretary of Science and Technology (DOST) Rowena Guevara.

“What’s great about the remote (work) arrangement is that there are no geographic boundaries, so we can reach a wider audience,” she explained.

According to the official, the idea to create an online application for Balik Scientists arose as a result of the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Interested applicants must complete five steps.

  1. Go to the Balik Scientist website ( and click the “Apply Now” button in the upper right corner.
  2. Complete the online registration form for the application. Begin with the type of engagement (e.g., short-term) and work your way down to their area of expertise. Click the Submit button.
  3. A confirmation email will appear on the screen. Click the “proceed” button. They will be notified via email that their registration form has been submitted. This email will also point them in the direction of their options. Option A is appropriate if they already have a host institution, while Option B is appropriate if they require assistance in finding a host institution.
  4. Review the application with the host institution, if applicable. Upload the required requirements at the end of the application, then click submit.
  5. They will be given a tracking number to use in order to receive updates on the status of their application.

Balik Scientists on a short-term assignment, according to Guevara, have been permitted to work remotely. There are currently 31 Balik Scientists program applicants awaiting evaluation.
