The Department of Health is looking at a plan to make quarantine easier for international tourists.

According to Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, the Department of Health (DOH) is now reviewing a proposal to relax quarantine procedures for international visitors.

“(W)e are currently investigating this together with our specialists to see what the proper advice is for this,” Vergeire said in a Laging Handa briefing.

She stated that the proposal was to remove arriving migrants from quarantine and isolation.

“(K)ung sakaling mai-recommenda ‘yan, tayo naman ay magiging handa kasi kapag matatandaan niyo four-door policy po ang ating ipinatutupad, tayo naman ay magiging handa kasi kapag matatandaan niyo four-door policy po ang Ang first door natin would be our border control, so mayroon tayong protections o layer of protection na ating aasahan kung sakasakaling mawawala po o tatanggalin na ang border control natin (If this is recommended, rest confident that we will be prepared because we already have the four-door policy.) Our first line of defense would be border control, but there are other safeguards or layers of protection we can rely on if this is removed), “she stated

The Four-Door Strategy, which was initially deployed during the Delta variation wave, is a national government-enabled and local government-led response.

Border control; active surveillance, including test and trace; early isolation and treatment of all persons who test positive; and the Covid-19 Vaccination Program are all part of the policy.

Joey Concepcion, the President’s Adviser for Entrepreneurship, had advocated phasing out quarantine for overseas passengers after the Covid-19 surge caused by the Omicron version diminishes.

Countries such as Thailand and Switzerland, according to Concepcion, have begun to open up to passengers by abolishing the mandatory quarantine upon arrival.

“We are not recommending that we immediately implement the ‘no quarantine’ policy.” “What I’m suggesting to our IATF (Inter-Agency Task Force) colleagues is a progressive move away from facility-based quarantine in the Philippines and toward home quarantine,” he stated.

“As we see Omicron begin to fade away, we may be able to gradually phase out our quarantine in our country.” (
