Gen. Dionardo Carlos, the Philippine National Police (PNP) head, praised the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Monday for praising the Asingan town police’s handling of the case of the 80-year-old man who was detained for allegedly stealing 10 kg of mangoes in Pangasinan.

“The PNP appreciates the CHR’s ability to view the big picture.” I’m hoping that this will dispel the perception that our officers were callous in their arrest of the subject “In a statement, Carlos remarked.

On Sunday, CHR spokesman Jacqueline de Guia applauded the police officers’ efforts to protect the rights of the accused, Nardo Flores.

“They had to serve the warrant, but because of Mr. Flores’ age and condition, the Asingan police simply took him into custody rather than detaining him,” Carlos explained.

According to reports, the town’s police officers pitched in to assist fund PHP6,000 for Flores’ bail.

Carlos responded that the CHR’s offer to look into an amicable settlement of the matter is outside the scope of the PNP’s mission.

“A theft charge has been filed, and an arraignment date has been set for February. If the parties concerned choose to pursue other options, the PNP will defer to the court’s decision,” Carlos stated.
