The number of daily coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the police force has dropped below 200 for the first time in more than a week.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported 169 new infections in its monthly Covid-19 bulletin on Monday, down 69 percent from a peak of 548 new infections on January 14.

Despite the new cases on Monday, the number of active infections fell to 3,016 from 3,151 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, another 304 fresh recoveries brought the total number of recoveries to 44,192, out of a total of 47,334 confirmed illnesses since the epidemic began.

The death toll has risen to 126.

According to the PNP, 217,386 (96.51 percent) of the 225,239 personnel have been fully vaccinated as of Sunday, while 6,819 (3.03 percent) are awaiting their second shot.

Only 1,034 PNP members (0.46 percent) have yet to be vaccinated.

Meanwhile, the PNP announced that it will increase its surveillance efforts after the Department of Health (DOH) discovered that the majority of minor Covid-19 patients are unvaccinated.

“It’s been a challenge for our police officers who check public spaces on a regular basis. In busy settings, we witness children with their parents or guardians blending in with the crowd,” PNP chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Carlos advised parents and guardians to keep youngsters out of crowded venues.

“We respect parents’ decisions to take their children outside their homes for essential activities, but adherence to the minimum public health standard should be paramount for children’s safety,” Carlos said, acknowledging that some local government units (LGUs) have chosen to prohibit minors from entering establishments.
