Western Visayas is 114 percent seafood adequate, according to a BFAR executive.

According to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), Western Visayas has 114 percent fish supply, therefore there is no risk of a shortage, said Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Director for Western Visayas Remia Aparri on Monday.

The Visayan Sea, Panay Gulf, Guimaras Strait, and the Sulu Sea, according to Aparri, provide the region’s fish supply.

“We haven’t had a fish shortage in the region yet.” In an interview, she stated, “We can provide for our requirements since we are 114 percent sufficient.”

She added that the region is capable of supplementing supplies to areas where there is a fish shortage.

Last year, she claimed, fish-sufficient regions supplied supplies to Metro Manila through the “Oplan Isda” that was initiated in the midst of the pandemic.

The central office supported the mobilization so that fish-sufficient regions could send stocks to places where there were shortages.

“We supplied roughly 10 metric tons of diverse species such as bangus and other pelagic species, which are highly in-demand in Metro Manila, according to the budget that was granted to us,” she said.

The “Oplan Isda” is still going strong in Luzon’s fish-rich regions, where transportation is not an issue.

She went on to say that the “Oplan Isda” is already part of BFAR’s initiatives to provide regions with adequate fish supplies.

She explained that the current importation did not cover the entire country, but rather the National Capital Region.

“Because we used to trade fish from our region when there is no importation, it is an advantage for our commercial and even municipal fishermen.” It has something to do with a stable market that will pay them,” she explained.
